Dollywood, the Tennessee theme park founded by country music legend Dolly Parton, has issued a statement vowing to honor her "heartfelt wish" that the park "always remains a place of joy, hope and togetherness" following her death at age 80. The announcement comes as questions arise about the future of the beloved attraction, which Parton jointly owned with Herschend Family Entertainment.
In the wake of Parton's passing on August 25, announced by her nephew and head of security Bryan Seaver, the park's leadership has affirmed its commitment to her vision. Eugene Naughton, President of Dollywood Parks & Resorts, stated, "Dolly’s heart was as vast as the mountains she cherished, and her compassion knew no bounds." He added, "While we grieve her loss, we are honored and committed to carry her light forward. Her legacy will continue to shine in every melody sung, every smile shared and every dream kindled within these gates."
Dollywood is set to open as scheduled, with Naughton emphasizing, "the show must go on" in Parton's signature style. The park aims to continue being a space where "families and friends could honor her memory, not with silence, but with laughter, music and shared dreams."
The dream of Dollywood began with Parton's childhood aspirations. In a 1982 interview with Barbara Walters, she expressed a desire to build a "Smoky Mountain fairy land" in her home region to capture its spirit and stimulate the local economy. This vision led to a partnership with brothers Pete and Jack Herschend, transforming the existing Silver Dollar City into Dollywood, which opened its doors on May 3, 1986. The park quickly became a popular destination, drawing significantly more visitors than its predecessor.
Dollywood has become a major economic force in Pigeon Forge and Sevier County, employing over 3,000 people during its peak operating season. In recent years, the park has also garnered accolades, being named the top amusement park in the United States by Tripadvisor in 2025 and recognized on TIME magazine’s list of the top 500 privately held companies.
Despite its success and popularity, Dollywood has faced various challenges. These have included a ride closure in December 2025, a delay in the opening of its new attraction, NightFlight Expedition, and controversy over a new system for its fountain drinks. The park has also been involved in several lawsuits over the years, including claims of injuries sustained on rides and by falling debris, with some cases resulting in settlements.
Parton, an iconic figure in country music for over six decades, passed away after a period of health issues. Her nephew described her final wishes as resting in a "beautiful bed of plush cotton" after a life spent in "heavy rhinestones." Dollywood's commitment to carrying forward her spirit aims to ensure the park remains a vibrant testament to her life and legacy.
