Stella Parton, sister of the late country music legend Dolly Parton, has shared that her sister's final request before her death was for prayer. Dolly Parton died at age 80 after a brief battle with cancer, a diagnosis she largely kept private.

During an interview with "CBS Mornings," Stella Parton recalled Dolly's last words to her. "That’s the last thing Dolly asked me for, was prayer," she stated. Stella noted that the family has chosen not to disclose the specific type of cancer Dolly had, honoring the singer's wish for privacy.

Concerns about Dolly Parton's health first surfaced in September 2025 when she postponed several Las Vegas concerts due to "a few procedures." Shortly after, her sister Freida asked fans to pray for Dolly, indicating the singer had not been feeling well. Stella suggested that Dolly might have been displeased with Freida for sharing this information publicly, believing Dolly preferred to keep her health struggles private to avoid causing worry.

According to Stella, Dolly's desire to shield her fans from negativity and worry contributed to her decision to keep her diagnosis secret. Stella also addressed speculation that Dolly may have died of a "broken heart" following the death of her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean, in March 2025. Stella stated that while Dolly was deeply saddened by her husband's passing, she believes Dolly's relentless work ethic may have contributed to her own declining health.

"I think she worked too hard and didn't maybe take as good a care of herself as she should have," Stella shared. She recalled Dolly mentioning that she spent considerable time caring for Carl, which may have led to neglecting her own well-being.

Stella described Dolly and Carl's relationship as unique, deep, and loyal, with Dean being supportive of Dolly's career. Despite her global fame, Dean remained unfazed by her stardom, reportedly preferring her to be at home. Stella also noted that after becoming famous, Dolly maintained her signature glamorous appearance even in private, often sleeping in her makeup.

Stella characterized Dolly as a savvy businesswoman who, despite having opinions on various topics, avoided public statements that could offend anyone. Reflecting on Dolly's final moments, Stella expressed certainty that her sister was at peace and "prepared" to join their parents in the afterlife.

When asked how she hopes Dolly will be remembered, Stella emphasized her sister's kindness, brilliance, talent, and boundless creativity. She expressed a wish for young people, particularly girls, to be inspired by Dolly's journey and to feel empowered to "dream bigger."
