The Los Angeles Dodgers' promotional partnership with the popular Japanese manga and anime series One Piece has generated significant buzz, with the exclusive 'Monkey D. Luffy DON!!' trading card for Thursday's giveaway already appearing on resale markets for prices far exceeding its face value. Listings on eBay are advertising the card for up to nearly $900, with some sellers offering presale versions graded as PSA 10 for over $3,500, despite the giveaway not having occurred yet.
Last year's similar promotion saw PSA 10 graded cards of the "2025 Dodgers x One Piece Night Monkey D. Luffy" card sell for between $4,000 and $4,600, indicating that the current resale prices, while steep, are not without precedent. This surge in secondary market value has established the free stadium giveaway as a highly sought-after collectible.
This phenomenon is seen as a continuation of the "Shohei Ohtani Effect," which has bolstered the Dodgers' appeal in Japan. Since acquiring Ohtani, alongside fellow Japanese stars Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Roki Sasaki, the team has attracted more than 20 Japanese corporate sponsors. This influx of partnerships has reportedly pushed the club's annual sponsorship revenue beyond $200 million, a first for a Major League Baseball franchise.
The collaboration also underscores the Dodgers' increasing connection with Japanese popular culture. One Piece, created by Eiichiro Oda, originated as a manga in 1997 and was adapted into an anime in 1999. The franchise remains a major entertainment property in Japan, with a live-action adaptation released on Netflix in 2023.
The Dodgers' first One Piece promotional night took place in 2025, and its success led to its return for a second consecutive year. The event is scheduled for Thursday, when the Dodgers host the San Diego Padres at Dodger Stadium. The first 52,000 ticketed fans entering the stadium will receive the 'Monkey D. Luffy DON!!' card and a co-branded Straw Hat.
In addition to the card giveaway, attendees on Thursday can experience One Piece-themed activities in the Centerfield Plaza, including a life-sized trading card display, photo opportunities, and a pre-game drone show.
