Disney World Monorail Strands Guests for 90 Minutes After Lightning Strike
Severe weather caused a lightning strike that shut down the monorail system, leaving passengers stuck in sweltering conditions.
Disney World guests experienced an extended delay on the monorail system when a lightning strike halted operations, leaving passengers stranded for approximately 90 minutes.
The incident occurred during a weekend of severe storms that affected the Florida theme park. Passengers reported that the lightning strike caused the electrical system to shut down, trapping them aboard the monorail.
During the delay, passengers attempted to alleviate the uncomfortable, hot, and humid conditions by opening the windows. One passenger, Tanya Lee, told Storyful News that the driver provided instructions on how to remove the windows. "We were there for one and a half hours and during that time, the driver talked us through how to take out the window," Lee stated.
After power was restored, the monorail was towed to the nearest station, where guests could safely disembark. Disney guest relations reportedly offered affected passengers $50 gift cards and Lightning Lane passes as compensation.
The incident comes as Florida experienced widespread thunderstorms throughout the weekend, with forecasts indicating more wet weather for the upcoming week.
