NFL insider Dianna Russini is reportedly preparing for a return to work as soon as next week, according to sources within the league. Her imminent comeback follows a period of absence after a scandal involving New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel erupted earlier this year.
Russini resigned from her position at The Athletic in April, shortly after photos surfaced of her with Vrabel at an Arizona resort. Additional photos later emerged showing the two kissing at a New York bar in March 2020. Both Russini and Vrabel, who are married with children, initially denied having an affair, but the images sparked widespread speculation.
Vrabel has since apologized for his "actions" without specifically admitting to an affair, and missed the final day of the NFL Draft to attend counseling.
The Athletic conducted an investigation into the matter, which concluded in September. The findings stated that Russini was "noncompliant" with the outlet's standards due to her relationship with Vrabel, which should have been disclosed regardless of its romantic nature. However, the investigation found limited evidence of bias in her reporting and no clear link that she used her platform to promote Vrabel or his teams.
Russini stated after the investigation, "I stand by any and all reporting I've ever done in my career." She also noted that while The Athletic initially supported her, the subsequent media frenzy, fueled by leaks, had caused more damage than she was willing to accept. She chose to step aside rather than allow the situation to continue.
Russini previously covered the NFL for ESPN, focusing on the Tennessee Titans when Vrabel was their head coach. She later joined The Athletic. Her potential return comes as the NFL season approaches its critical stages.
