Alex Garneau, a mother of two from Prince George, British Columbia, died on August 20 when a small charter plane crashed into her vehicle on a busy highway. The aircraft lost power mid-flight, subsequently hitting four cars and crossing three lanes of traffic.
Garneau was the sole fatality in the incident. Two other individuals in vehicles were transported to the hospital and are in stable condition. The eight passengers aboard the Sekani Air-operated plane were unharmed.
Friends and family remembered Garneau as a devoted mother to Josie and Jackson, actively involved in their lives and community. A GoFundMe created in her memory highlighted her role as a wife, daughter, sister, and friend, emphasizing her supportive nature and ability to make others feel included. The fundraiser has gathered over $131,000 CAD (approximately $95,000 USD).
Another fundraiser, initiated by the Junior Ducks Hockey Club, described Garneau as more than just a hockey mom, noting her consistent help with organizing, supporting, and traveling for the team. This effort has raised over $23,000 CAD (approximately $16,600 USD).
Garneau also had a strong background in sports, having been a competitive athlete in volleyball. She was a two-time champion with the Prince George Youth Volleyball Club and a member of Team BC before playing varsity volleyball at Capilano University. After her playing career, she contributed as a coach in the league.
The Beech King Air 200 aircraft was en route to a remote airstrip near Prince George when it declared an emergency and diverted to Foothills Boulevard. Preliminary findings suggest an engine failure. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is investigating the incident, and Sekani Air is cooperating with the investigation. A full report is expected in the coming months.
