Search and rescue teams are urgently looking for Ian Roberts, 24, who disappeared Friday while on a solo hike in the American River Canyon in Placer County, California. Roberts drove to the remote area for a hike and has not been seen or heard from since.
"Time is of the essence," Elise Soviar, spokeswoman for the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, told The California Post. "Search and rescue crews came in this morning from even more agencies today, so they are already out in the field back at the search."
Land and water search teams from Napa, Santa Clara, Marin, and Sacramento Counties have joined Placer County and other teams in the extensive hunt. With temperatures expected to reach 94 degrees, dozens of personnel are involved in the search, prioritizing efforts before conditions worsen.
The American River Canyon, bordered by rugged gorges carved by three forks of the American River, extends through the western Sierra Nevada foothills. Roberts, described as a regular hiker, likely planned a challenging trek through canyons known to be populated by black bears, mountain lions, and rattlesnakes. He parked his car at Overlook Park in Auburn, which serves as a trailhead for multiple pathways.
Roberts' parents reported him missing Saturday morning after they had not heard from him. Authorities located his empty vehicle at the trailhead, initiating the canyon search. Soviar stated, "We believe that he went hiking down into the American River Canyon, and it can get steep. It’s been really hot the last couple of days, so we really appreciate all these volunteers coming out here to help."
The area is known for its hazardous gorges that drop steeply towards the river. In addition to the risk of dehydration from the heat, the American River is a habitat for wildlife, with regular sightings of snakes, bears, and predatory cats.
Ian Roberts is described as six feet tall, weighing 210 pounds. He was last seen wearing a brown t-shirt, dark shorts, and possibly a beanie. Authorities are urging anyone who spots Roberts to contact them immediately.
