Dermatologist Corey Hartman has voiced concerns regarding the potential long-term health risks associated with 13-year-old North West's hand piercings. These piercings, which include dermal and surface styles, could lead to complications such as scarring, disfigurement, and loss of function, particularly for individuals with highly-melanated skin.
Hartman, founder and medical director of Skin Wellness Dermatology, advised against such body modifications, especially for minors. He explained that hand piercings carry a higher risk than more common piercings like those on earlobes due to the complex anatomy involved, including tendons and superficial tendons. Disruption of these structures could impair hand movement and function.
Types of Hand Piercings and Associated Risks
Dermal piercings involve a single-point anchor inserted beneath the skin, with jewelry screwed into it, creating the appearance of floating ornamentation. Surface piercings, conversely, have two entry points connected by a barbell beneath the skin. Both types are more complex than traditional piercings.
Potential complications identified by Hartman include rejection, where the body pushes out the jewelry; scarring as the hole closes; tissue damage from improper anchor placement near blood vessels or nerves; and hypergranulation, a raised red bump around the piercing site. Changing jewelry on hand piercings can also be complicated, with professionals recommending expert assistance to avoid dislodging the anchor or causing further issues. Permanent removal also requires professional intervention.
While it is unclear how many of West's piercings are authentic, visible scarring and discoloration around some sites suggest genuine modifications. Hartman noted that minors may not fully grasp the permanent consequences of such procedures. He stressed the importance of parental consent and careful consideration of a child's psychological maturity, the permanence of the modification, potential side effects, and the facility and piercer's qualifications.
Kim Kardashian has previously supported her daughter's self-expression through fashion and beauty choices. North West herself has addressed criticism on social media, defending her piercings. Despite the public attention, Hartman reiterated his professional opinion that such piercings should be reconsidered, ideally after an individual reaches the age of 18, allowing for a more informed decision about permanent body modifications.
