A growing number of Democrats are calling for Graham Platner to withdraw from the Maine Senate race following a report alleging that he sexually assaulted a woman he had previously dated in 2021. The calls signify increasing pressure on Platner, who has denied the allegation, to step aside.
The Maine Democratic Party stated its commitment to supporting survivors, regardless of political affiliation. "The Maine Democratic Party leadership stands with women and survivors, and that principle does not bend based on party affiliation," the party said in a statement. "We respect the women who made the hard decision to come forward. Speaking up is often costly."
Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona publicly urged Platner's withdrawal, stating, "It’s time for Graham Platner to drop out and allow for someone else to be nominated and give Democrats the best chance to win this seat in November."
Democrats have until Monday to replace Platner on the ballot if he chooses to exit the race, allowing the party to select a new nominee in time for the upcoming election.
