Congressional Democrats have released a dossier alleging that a Trump-aligned group, Freedom 250, misled donors into bankrolling a "partisan" celebration for the nation's 250th anniversary, potentially diverting funds from the congressionally chartered America250 commission. The interim report from the House Natural Resources Committee claims that Freedom 250 exploited the credibility and donor relationships of the National Park Foundation to funnel money towards events focused on President Trump.

According to the 55-page report, which cites whistleblower testimony and new documents, Freedom 250 received the majority of federally allocated funds for the semiquincentennial festivities, while America250 received only a small fraction. Democrats accuse Freedom 250 of using America250's donor network to hijack funds for predominantly Trump-centric events. The report suggests this redirection may have constituted wire fraud, stating that donors intending to support the congressionally chartered foundation were instead given Freedom 250's banking information.

Freedom 250 has been associated with events such as a White House UFC fight on Trump's birthday, his speech opening the Great American State Fair, and an upcoming Independence Day address. Sponsorship packages from Freedom 250 reportedly ranged from hundreds of thousands to over $10 million, promising access to Trump, including "historic photo opportunities."

In contrast, America250 has organized events like a concert featuring artists such as Chris Stapleton and The Smashing Pumpkins, with tickets priced at $17.76. The commission has also hosted charitable initiatives like the "Greatest American Cleanup" and educational events at presidential libraries. The report claims America250 was starved of funds due to donors being diverted to Freedom 250, with some donors reportedly being "affirmatively misled by fundraisers, including the President's lead fundraiser, Meredith O'Rourke."

The report further alleges that the shift in focus for the 250th celebrations aided Trump in enriching his allies, gathering voter data, and promoting Christian ideology. California Democratic Congressman Jared Huffman, a member of the committee, stated that if Democrats gain control of the House in the upcoming midterms, they would use subpoena power to further investigate Freedom 250.

Freedom 250 has reportedly faced challenges in event planning, including performer cancellations and issues at its National Mall celebration, such as generators failing amid extreme heat. A spokesperson for America250 declined to comment on the specifics of the report but stated that America250 has participated in significant cultural and sporting events, including New Year's Eve in Times Square, the Rose Parade, the Artemis II launch, the Super Bowl, and the NBA Playoffs. The White House referred requests for comment to Freedom 250.
