Democrats swept key races across New York, fueled by anti-Donald Trump sentiment, resulting in a significant expansion of their majorities in both the State Senate and Assembly. The elections saw Republicans lose ground, reversing recent gains and bolstering the Democratic Party's control over the state's legislative bodies.
The Democratic wave secured a 47-seat majority in the 63-seat State Senate, marking the largest majority the party has held since 1847. Democrats also maintained substantial majorities in the Assembly and won every statewide office.
In a notable State Senate contest in District 17, which includes Dyker Heights, Bensonhurst, and Bath Beach, Democrat Larry He defeated incumbent Republican Steve Chan with 57% of the vote. This race gained attention following an incident where a campaign volunteer for Chan was arrested for allegedly assaulting a He campaign aide.
Further gains for Democrats were seen in southern Brooklyn's Assembly districts. Joey Saban unseated Republican incumbent Michael Novakhov in the 45th Assembly District, which encompasses Midwood, Gravesend, and Brighton Beach, with 61% of the vote. In the 46th Assembly District, covering Bay Ridge, Coney Island, and Sea Gate, Democrat Chris McGreight defeated incumbent Alec Brook-Krasny, a former Democrat who had switched parties, with 55% of the vote.
Democrat Joyce Xiaoqiong Xie also unseated Republican incumbent Lester Chang in the 49th Assembly District, which includes Bensonhurst, securing 52% of the vote. Democrats had needed to win just one seat to achieve a veto-proof majority in the State Senate.
On Long Island, Democrats also made inroads. In Suffolk County's 1st District, Democrat Christopher Murray narrowly defeated Republican incumbent Anthony Palumbo. In Nassau County's 9th District, Democrat Lisa Malkie Vider unseated Republican incumbent Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick.
Despite the overall trend, Republicans managed to pick up two seats in the Hudson Valley. In Rockland County's 38th District, Democrat Joseph Rand defeated Republican incumbent Bill Weber. In the 39th District, covering parts of Dutchess, Orange, and Putnam counties, Democrat Lisa Kaul defeated Republican incumbent Rob Rolison. Additionally, Democrat Sarah Rogerson defeated Republican Jim Tedico in the 44th Capital District.
The New York Post highlighted the election results on its front page with a graphic depicting a "blue wave" overwhelming Donald Trump, underscoring the impact of anti-Trump sentiment on the outcomes. The publication noted that the Democratic Party had picked up as many as six seats across the state in the Senate contests alone.
