Democrat James Talarico has won the Texas Senate race, defeating Republican incumbent Ken Paxton in a historic upset that ends a 38-year streak for the Republican party in the state's Senate elections. The victory makes Talarico the first Democrat to win a U.S. Senate seat in Texas since 1988.
The Associated Press called the race for Talarico, leading to scenes of devastation at Paxton's election night headquarters, captured on video by New York Times reporter Lauren McGaughy. In the footage, an anguished supporter is heard shouting "No!" as the results were announced.
Talarico, a 37-year-old state representative, campaigned on issues such as lowering the cost of living, combating political corruption, and reducing the influence of wealthy donors. He told supporters at his election celebration in Austin, "We just took back Texas!"
Paxton's campaign faced challenges, including a 2023 impeachment by members of his own party, though he was later acquitted by the Texas Senate. Talarico had criticized Paxton's record, highlighting past legal troubles. Conversely, Paxton's campaign had focused on Talarico's statements on issues such as God's gender and trans rights.
With 84 percent of the vote counted, Talarico held a significant lead of 12 points. Talarico framed his victory as a win for "the underdog" and stated the core conflict in the country is not ideological, but rather between "top versus bottom."
The race was notably expensive, with nearly $590 million spent on advertising throughout the primary and general election campaigns, making it the most costly Senate race in U.S. history.
