Dr. Annie Andrews, a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in South Carolina, has sharply criticized her opponent, incumbent Sen. Darline Graham, over Graham's views on healthcare. Andrews, a pediatric physician, labeled Graham's approach to healthcare as essentially advocating for people to "work hard until you die."
Graham, a Republican endorsed by former President Trump, recently won her party's runoff election. She has publicly criticized Andrews' support for gun control and "government-run health care." Graham invoked a personal anecdote about her parents, stating they "worked long, hard hours to make ends meet" and could not afford to miss work due to illness, which she suggested was a model for financial responsibility.
Andrews responded directly to Graham's anecdote, stating that Graham's parents "deserved better." She contrasted Graham's perspective with her own, as a physician who has spent two decades on the front lines of the healthcare system. "I believe that healthcare is a human right, that we must shift America’s profit-motivated healthcare system to a patient-centered healthcare system that actually meets the needs of everyone in this country," Andrews said.
Andrews also accused Graham of resorting to "culture war topics that have no basis in reality" and stated that she is focused on engaging with South Carolina voters. According to Andrews, voters are expressing frustration with policies that have led to increased grocery prices and new military conflicts, which she contrasted with Trump's campaign promises.
The Democratic candidate has challenged Graham to a televised debate but has not yet received a response. Andrews noted that Graham previously struggled with an answer regarding national security during a prior debate and expressed skepticism about Graham's willingness to participate in further public discussion. "This is an open Senate seat, and voters deserve to hear from both of us, but I don’t have a lot of high hopes that Darline will be brave enough to step on the debate stage with me," Andrews stated.
