Italian authorities are investigating the death of a 33-year-old female crew member found in her stateroom on the Celebrity Constellation cruise ship. The woman, identified by local media as 'KD', was discovered by her partner, a fellow crew member, on July 19 as the ship was sailing towards La Spezia, Italy.
Ship officers and medical personnel were immediately alerted. Upon the vessel docking in La Spezia, Italian State Police boarded the ship to commence their investigation. While the official cause of death has not been confirmed, local reports suggest authorities are considering suicide as a possibility, based on initial findings.
Security footage that recorded individuals entering and exiting the cabin has been reviewed by investigators. At this time, there are no indications of foul play or any suspects identified, and no charges or arrests have been made. KD's body was transferred to the Sant'Andrea Hospital morgue for further examination.
The Celebrity Constellation did not experience delays and departed from Spezia as scheduled on July 19, subsequently returning to Civitavecchia, Rome, on July 20. The ship has since embarked on an 11-day voyage to Ravenna.
La Spezia was the final port of call on the ship's itinerary, which had included stops in Italy, Montenegro, and Croatia. The Celebrity Constellation has 11 decks, measures 965 feet in length, and can accommodate up to 2,184 guests and 1,022 crew members. Crew contracts typically span several months, but it is not clear if this was KD's first contract with the cruise line.
Celebrity Cruises has not yet issued an official statement regarding the crew member's death when contacted by the Daily Mail.
