David Walliams World at Alton Towers Faces Potential Closure Amidst Author's Controversies

The World of David Walliams attraction at Alton Towers theme park may be facing permanent closure, with reports indicating the area is now shut for most of the week. The attraction, which opened in May 2021 and is inspired by the works of children's author David Walliams, has seen reduced operating hours, leading to speculation about its future.

Visitors have noted that the area is largely closed on weekdays, with barriers preventing access. One theme park fan described the situation as creating a "slightly creepy environment" due to the music still playing in the deserted area. Another observer commented on the attraction appearing "rarely busy" and the theming showing signs of damage, suggesting it might be removed or re-themed.

The closure of the area for multiple days a week comes several months after David Walliams was dropped by his publisher, HarperCollins, in December 2025. The publisher cited allegations of inappropriate behavior towards women, which the author has reportedly denied. Walliams has largely withdrawn from public life since these allegations surfaced.

The flagship attraction within the area is the £18 million Gangsta Granny ride, based on his popular book. The World of David Walliams also includes a gift shop named Raj's Shop and two other rides, Flavio's Fabulous Fandango and Royal Carousel, all themed around the Gangsta Granny book.

It is understood that the intellectual property agreement for the use of Walliams's work at Alton Towers was set to expire at the end of 2026. Merlin Entertainments, the owner of Alton Towers and other theme parks such as Chessington World of Adventures and Thorpe Park, is reportedly considering the fate of this section of the park.

A spokesperson for Alton Towers confirmed that The World of David Walliams will operate on selected dates as the park moves into its autumn event season, including weekends and during special events like Scarefest and fireworks. The rest of the resort remains open as usual.
