Getaway star David Reyne has disclosed his recent fight with prostate cancer, an experience he described as a stark reminder of his own mortality. The 67-year-old television personality and musician underwent a five-hour surgery after receiving the diagnosis.
"I had prostate cancer, I had to have a major five-hour surgery," Reyne stated in an interview. "You're staring down mortality."
Reyne detailed that he engaged in significant preparation for the procedure, including pelvic floor exercises. He also expressed fascination with the robotic technology employed during the operation. "It was all robotic, it's crazy," he remarked.
He confirmed the surgery was successful, stating, "Thankfully, the surgery was a success. I came through with flying colours, fortunately." However, Reyne acknowledged the emotional impact of living with cancer, noting a lingering sense of unease even after treatment concludes. "When you're living with cancer within, there's always that grey gloom looming in the background," he explained. "And you come out the other side of it, you say, 'Yep, everything's rosy now'."
Despite the challenging health ordeal, Reyne reported a renewed sense of optimism. "I've come out of that with this outlook which is just all sunny and joyous," he said.
This period of recovery coincides with Reyne's upcoming performances with his brother, James Reyne, and the band Australian Crawl. Reyne was the original drummer for Australian Crawl for approximately 18 months before departing in 1979 to pursue an acting career, shortly before the band achieved mainstream success.
Reflecting on his return to the stage for the Red Hot Summer Tour, Reyne described the timing as particularly meaningful. "To have this slot in at this particular time, it makes my heart sing, really," he said.
Reyne indicated no plans to slow down his career, expressing a desire to continuously seek new projects. "I love to keep working. Whenever I think that something's maybe coming to an end, I think, 'Well, what am I going to replace it with?'" he stated. "So I always want to have something bubbling along. And it just makes life more interesting, doesn't it?"
