Sara Foster has defended the 34-year age difference between her father, composer David Foster, and his wife, singer Katharine McPhee Foster. The age gap has been a subject of public discussion since the couple married seven years ago.

"I think they've gotten so much not s*** [for] the age difference," Sara Foster, 45, told Kristin Cavallari on the podcast "Let's Be Honest." She added that the couple has been together for about 12 years and "are happy." Foster emphasized that McPhee is a "fully consenting lady" in her 40s, not a "child bride."

Sara Foster, who is three years older than McPhee, stated that it is not easy to be a stepmother. She described the situation as a "tough balance" between wanting her father's children to like her and showing up as a motherly figure while respecting the biological mother. She believes McPhee handles this role effectively.

David Foster, 76, and McPhee, 40, celebrated their seventh wedding anniversary on Sunday. They met in 2006 when McPhee was a contestant on American Idol, where Foster was a guest mentor. The couple, who share a five-year-old son, Rennie David, are scheduled to perform together on July 10.

McPhee previously was married to Nick Cokas, from whom she divorced in 2016. She also garnered attention for a relationship with Smash director Michael Morris. Her company, KMF Jewelry, reportedly folded in 2024 after two years in business. David Foster has five older daughters from previous marriages.
