Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy has stated he would consider running for elected office, expressing a strong desire to challenge New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Portnoy voiced his frustrations with what he described as "clown politicians" and "dummies" currently in leadership positions, particularly in New York.
During an appearance on "Jesse Watters Primetime," Portnoy said, "I would love to run against him. If I were gonna run, it would be here." He indicated that his previous stance of never wanting to be involved in politics has shifted due to his concerns about the direction of governance, especially in New York City. Portnoy criticized the Democratic Party for embracing what he termed "lefty socialists," suggesting they have allowed radical elements to gain influence.
Portnoy's comments came after three congressional candidates endorsed by Mayor Mamdani won their primary elections, defeating establishment Democratic opponents. The Barstool founder noted that his inclination to enter politics fluctuates, with some days bringing a sense of duty to potentially "make a change."
He contrasted himself with current politicians, stating, "Unlike these clown politicians who have never had a job and who’ve never been in the real world for a day." Portnoy acknowledged uncertainty about his potential electoral success in New York, citing unknowns regarding demographics and vote acquisition, but also noted, "There’s a lot of people who like me in New York City. I know that."
