Reality television personality Dave Hand has shared an emotional update on his father Howard's ongoing battle with cancer, announcing that treatment has been halted as the disease progresses.
In a social media clip, Hand, 38, revealed he had recently received difficult news from the hospital. "The cancer's growing too quickly, so they've stopped all treatment," Hand told his followers. He admitted that while he anticipated this outcome, "the reality of the situation doesn't make it any easier."
Hand described the emotional toll of the disease, stating, "Anyone who's going through cancer struggles with family members or with it themselves, f**k, it's hard... It just sucks hearing it, man." He expressed the deep personal impact, adding, "He's my dad, you know? They're your loved ones."
In an accompanying caption, Hand conveyed gratitude for the support he and his father have received. "This is all a part of life and how brutal it can be, but don't think for one second it takes away from a lifetime of beautiful memories," he wrote, noting plans to spend quality time together.
Fans and fellow reality stars offered messages of support. Teejay Halkias, a fellow "Married At First Sight" contestant, shared his understanding, stating, "Thoughts and prayers, Dave, my nana is going through the same thing right now so I understand your pain brother." Al Perkins, another "MAFS" alum, commented, "Love ya man! Can't imagine the pain."
Hand acknowledged the widespread impact of the disease among his followers. "It's so confronting hearing how so many of you are affected by this disease, but so grateful it brings us all together at the same time and know none of us are alone," he wrote.
Howard Hand has been fighting cancer for six years. Dave Hand first shared news of his father's diagnosis when he appeared on "Married At First Sight," at which time Howard was undergoing his fourth round of chemotherapy. Although there was a period of hope during the show's Homestays Week when some of his father's tumors appeared to shrink or disappear, Dave confirmed in July 2025 that the cancer had returned.
Hand's father's health struggles have been a recurring theme since his initial appearance on the dating experiment. He also recently discussed his experience on the show, revealing that he almost left "Married At First Sight" before participating in Netflix's "Perfect Match." Hand described feeling pressured by production to stay on the show during filming, an experience he said left him emotionally exhausted.
