Daniel Kinahan, the alleged head of the Kinahan Cartel, has been extradited from Dubai and is now housed in Portlaoise Prison, a high-security facility in Ireland. The 49-year-old faces charges related to directing a criminal organization involved in drug smuggling, gun running, and money laundering across multiple continents.

Kinahan was taken to Portlaoise Prison following his appearance at the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin on Sunday. He is being held in A Block, a section of the prison designated for high-risk inmates. His daily routine involves being confined to his cell for approximately 20 hours, with meals delivered by prison officers. His diet is described as simple, consisting of cereal, "meat and two veg," and sausages with baked beans.

Prison Environment and Inmates

Portlaoise Prison, a 200-year-old institution, was historically used to house Irish Republican Army (IRA) inmates. It is now home to a more diverse population of dangerous criminals. Kinahan is believed to be sharing a landing with Nathan McDonnell, convicted of crystal meth smuggling, and Andy Cash, who was found guilty of triple murder. Other high-risk inmates include Benjamin Morrissey, known for assaulting a prison officer, and Aaron Brady, convicted of killing a police officer.

Prisoners in A Block are kept on a 24-hour suicide watch and monitored closely. Kinahan will exercise alone in a yard covered with wire netting to prevent contraband from being dropped in by drones. Visitors will be separated by a glass pane, though he will have access to video calls with his family in Dubai.

Chris Dalby, director of consultancy World of Crime, has indicated a concern that Kinahan could be a target for assassination by rivals or former associates who fear he might cooperate with authorities. There is also a possibility of a rescue attempt by remaining members of the Kinahan Cartel.

Kinahan's Concerns and Previous Conditions

Kinahan himself has expressed fears about his safety, stating in a previous interview that any harm that befell him should not be attributed to suicide. He is expected to receive a life sentence and is being held in the A5 unit of the high-security block.

Conditions at Portlaoise are reportedly an improvement from his previous detention in Al Awir Central Jail in Dubai, where he had access to a private gym and a library. However, segregation in A Block makes interaction with other inmates nearly impossible. Access to workshops and educational activities is limited, and family visits are conducted through a screen.

Kinahan appeared in court wearing a black hoodie and tracksuit bottoms, described by observers as looking pale and older than in recent photographs. He acknowledged the unlikelihood of being granted bail. His legal team has previously denied allegations of him being a crime boss, stating that the claims are unsupported by evidence. His next court hearing is scheduled for October 5.
