Lewis Potter, a 25-year-old dance teacher from Fife, Scotland, has been detained in Taiwan since June after customs officials found a substance in a suitcase he was carrying. Potter has stated he was unaware of the contents of the suitcase, which he agreed to transport for a friend.
His family described the situation as "heartbreaking" and expressed concern over his well-being, noting a month of no contact and difficulties with communication due to language barriers and time differences. Potter's mother, Andrina Law, said the uncertainty has been a significant ordeal for the family, and they are seeking to ensure her son's safety and provide him with legal support.
Potter, a graduate of Liverpool Theatre School and a dance teacher at LP Creative, was on what was intended to be a holiday. According to his family, the friend who asked him to carry the suitcase had initially planned to travel with him but withdrew shortly before the trip. Potter reportedly believed the friend to be trustworthy and had no reason to suspect any illicit contents.
The case is currently under investigation, and Potter is receiving legal representation. His family has launched a Crowdfunding appeal to help cover the estimated £12,000 in legal costs, which includes £6,000 for the investigation and an additional £6,000 should the case proceed to court. The appeal has raised £1,340 thus far.
Family members have highlighted Potter's character, describing him as a dedicated professional who inspires young people through dance and is known for his kindness and hard work. His absence has created a significant void for his loved ones.
