The Los Angeles Dodgers significantly strengthened their pitching rotation ahead of the trade deadline by acquiring ace Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers. This move, however, has inadvertently aided the Dodgers through a previous transaction involving the Chicago Cubs.

The Cubs were among several teams that had reportedly shown interest in Skubal, a pitcher who has won back-to-back Cy Young awards. Chicago's pitching staff has been impacted by injuries this season, and adding Skubal could have bolstered their position in the National League Wild Card race and their chances against the Dodgers in the postseason. Despite Skubal being slated to hit free agency after the season, his acquisition was seen as a major potential boost for any contending team.

Instead, the Dodgers, already considered top contenders, acquired Skubal by sending prospects Zyhir Hope, River Ryan, and Brady Smith to Detroit. Hope, rated as the top prospect in the deal, was originally selected 11th overall by the Cubs in the 2023 MLB June Amateur Draft. The Cubs then traded Hope to the Dodgers in 2024 as part of a deal that brought first baseman Michael Busch to Chicago.

Busch has since become a consistent contributor for the Cubs over his three seasons with the team. However, the circumstances of the Skubal trade highlight how a player once drafted by the Cubs ultimately facilitated the acquisition of a top-tier pitcher by the Dodgers.

Skubal could potentially make his Dodgers debut this week in Chicago, as the Dodgers are scheduled to begin a three-game series against the Cubs on Monday.
