Mason Gooding, the youngest son of Oscar-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr., has described his father's approach to parenting as "speed-parenting" due to the demands of his acting career.

"When you’re a parent who’s an actor and you’re gone for so long, then you come back, you try to… the word would be speed-parent… 'cause you come in for a week, and you’re like, ‘Why is that broken? Why are you failing school? Why are you fighting?’" Mason Gooding explained on the "Wildmen" podcast.

Gooding, now 29, stated that he didn't fully grasp his relationship with his father during his childhood. He noted a dissonance between his father's public persona, often seen as positive and charismatic in interviews, and the "different guy" he was at home. This disparity made it difficult for him to understand and process their relationship as he grew up.

"I have probably a stronger relationship and understanding based on who they were publicly than who they were privately," Mason Gooding said, referring to both his father and his late grandfather, singer Cuba Gooding Sr. He added that it wasn't until he was older that his father could articulate many of the lessons he learned as a child.

Mason Gooding, who has followed in his father's footsteps and become an actor himself, said that people on set sometimes ask him for advice on how to avoid repeating similar parenting challenges. His advice centers on recognizing that a child may perceive their parent's public persona in a similar way an audience does, and that the gap between the public and private self can impact how a child views the relationship.

Cuba Gooding Jr., 58, has three children with his ex-wife, Sara Kapfer: Spencer, 32, Mason, 29, and Piper, 21.

The actor's career has been marked by significant legal issues in recent years. In 2022, he pleaded guilty to one count of forcible touching for kissing a waitress without consent in 2018. This plea was later reduced to a harassment violation, allowing him to avoid jail time and a criminal record after completing six months of alcohol and behavioral counseling.

In June 2023, Cuba Gooding Jr. settled a lawsuit with a woman who accused him of rape in 2013. He has also faced multiple accusations of sexual misconduct from other women, which he has consistently denied.
