A Sydney woman's holiday romance aboard a cruise ship ended abruptly when she discovered the man she believed she was falling in love with was already engaged.
Sammi, 44, met Liam McAuley, 41, from the United Kingdom, during a nine-day voyage from Sydney to the Whitsunday Islands in August. Describing him as "Mr. UK," Sammi quickly became infatuated with McAuley, who she said swept her off her feet with expensive dates and introductions to his family.
During their nine days together, the couple became so close that other passengers assumed they had been married for years. Sammi, who had previously put her love life on hold for 14 years to care for her son, Jett, who had been diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer, thought she had found a new partner. She shared photos of them on social media, announcing she was no longer single.
Sammi stated that McAuley had assured her he was single and that she had taken steps to verify his status, including meeting his mother and sister and observing his interactions with his phone. She mentioned past negative dating experiences and a previous betrayal, which made her cautious.
McAuley, who had been on the cruise and was then due to fly home, extended his stay by an additional week at Sammi's invitation. The couple discussed the possibility of a long-distance relationship, including visas and finances.
However, Sammi's perception of the burgeoning romance shattered when her TikTok videos about the relationship went viral. Among the hundreds of comments congratulating her was a message from McAuley's fiancée of eight years, who identified herself and stated she had been left with no choice but to make her relationship public.
Sammi confronted McAuley, who initially denied the claims but then admitted they were true, describing the situation as "complicated." Sammi asked him to leave, and he departed for his flight home as planned. She described the experience as humiliating, especially as online speculation arose that she should have recognized warning signs.
McAuley, speaking from the UK, acknowledged handling the situation poorly and expressed his apologies to both Sammi and his fiancée. He stated that while he believed his relationship with his fiancée had ended, he regretted the hurt caused and acknowledged that Sammi had changed his perspective on happiness.
