Dalibor Sentic, who was 10 years old when his family fled Croatia amid the Balkan war in the early 1990s, has used social media to find and thank two siblings from Wales who sent him a Christmas present over 30 years ago. The gift arrived when his family had relocated to Stockholm, Sweden, and he had only limited information about the donors.
Sentic, now 44, was able to connect with Claire and Peter, who were eight and six, respectively, when they sent the package. He described the act as having "meant a lot" during a period of significant upheaval.
Recounting his experience, Sentic stated that his family "had basically nothing" when they fled their homeland. He recalled hearing bombs and described the move to a new country as "tough on a kid," despite his parents' efforts to ensure he felt "loved and secure."
Months before his family's departure, Sentic's teacher presented him with a package to open. Inside was a photograph of Claire and Peter, an image he kept for more than three decades. He reflected that "the older you get the more you understand the meaning behind small gestures."
