Northern Crete provides an appealing destination for multi-generational family travel, offering a combination of villa comforts, natural beauty, and authentic local experiences. The island, known for its historical significance and healthy diet, served as the setting for a recent family getaway.

The journey focused on a stay at Kompsos Villa, situated in the hills outside the capital, Heraklion. This location, surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, provided a tranquil base for a family including children aged four and seven, their parents, and a grandparent.

The villa's amenities, such as a heated infinity pool, playground, snooker room, and gym, catered to various age groups, allowing for both active play and relaxation. The multi-level layout offered privacy, enabling adults to rest while children enjoyed the facilities.

Crete's history dates back tens of thousands of years, with tourism gaining popularity in the late 1960s and early 1970s. While some areas have seen development, pockets of unspoiled landscapes and traditional villages remain accessible. A ten-minute drive from larger resorts can lead to areas that have retained their historic character.

Exploring Authentic Cretan Life

One afternoon, the family ventured inland to Archanes, a town with roots in the Minoan era. The visit involved exploring cobbled streets and dining at a local restaurant, Agora, where the atmosphere reflected traditional Greek life with locals engaged in games and conversation. The meal featured local delicacies such as baked feta and homemade wine.

Days were spent balancing leisure time at the villa with excursions to local towns. The culinary experience continued with a final evening meal prepared by a local chef, featuring dishes like salt-baked beetroot, chickpea and pomegranate salads, and roasted lamb. Local women's cooperatives contributed cheese pies to the meal.

The travel notes also briefly mentioned a protest by local farmers regarding EU money distribution on the route to Heraklion airport, underscoring the importance of protecting the island's agricultural produce.
