As the people of Clacton prepare to vote in a by-election, public opinion polls indicate a surprising lead for joke candidate Count Binface over Reform leader Nigel Farage. A survey by research firm More in Common reveals that 37 percent of Britons would prefer Count Binface to be elected MP for Clacton, while only 32 percent back Mr. Farage.
Despite this public sentiment, bookmakers heavily favor Mr. Farage to win the seat. Ladbrokes gives him a 99 percent chance of re-election, and betting platform Star Sports anticipates paying out over £60,000 if Count Binface secures a victory. Historically, Clacton has been a stronghold for right-wing parties.
The by-election was triggered by Mr. Farage's resignation as MP in July, a move he described as a protest against his treatment regarding his tax affairs. He stated the election provides an opportunity to advocate for his past actions in the area and Reform's future platform for Britain. Mr. Farage also suggested that a victory in Clacton could lead to Reform unseating Conservative frontbenchers in Essex in a future general election.
Polling firm Survation predicts Mr. Farage will secure nearly three-quarters of the vote in Clacton, despite a crowded ballot featuring 34 candidates. Among the other candidates are 'Nick the Flying Brick' and 'Baron von Thunderclap' of the Official Monster Raving Loony Party, and 'Woke Trump Carrzee' running as an Independent.
Mainstream parties including the Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats, and Greens opted not to field candidates in response to Mr. Farage triggering the by-election. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch referred to the contest as "fake."
More in Common director Luke Tryl noted that while Count Binface is unlikely to win, there is a risk of low voter turnout, which could be an embarrassing outcome for Mr. Farage. He also indicated that some Clacton voters perceive Count Binface's candidacy as making a mockery of the election, leaving some, particularly young first-time voters, feeling disparaged by the overall process.
