Rock, a village on the north Cornwall coast, has earned nicknames like 'England's St Tropez' and 'the Kensington of Cornwall' due to its popularity among the rich and famous. This influx of high-profile individuals, including celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, has transformed the once humble village into a sought-after destination.

Ramsay himself purchased a £4.4 million beachside mansion in Rock in 2015. He later obtained approval to demolish the original 1920s Arts and Crafts-style house and replace it with a modern villa featuring a gym, pool, cellar, and guest annexe. This redevelopment reportedly faced objections from some neighbors who disliked the loss of the historically significant property and its replacement with a contemporary design.

Another notable resident is chef Paul Ainsworth, owner of The Mariners pub in the area. Comedian Jack Whitehall has also been known to frequent Rock. The construction and redevelopment of luxury properties are ongoing throughout the village, contributing to a persistent ambiance of building work.

These developments have not been universally welcomed by the local population. Concerns have been raised about the disruptive nature of the constant construction noise, which YouTubers Sarah and Andrew of the 'Cornish Walking Trails' channel highlighted in a video from April 2026. They noted that as affluent individuals and celebrities acquire older properties, their desire to redevelop them to personal specifications often leads to extensive building projects.

The transformation of Rock reflects a broader trend of desirable coastal villages becoming magnets for wealthy buyers, often leading to a disconnect between new residents' desires and the existing community's preferences.
