A conductor for the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway in Chattanooga, Tennessee, was fired after his Independence Day remarks to passengers sparked controversy. The conductor, Jack Peterson, told passengers, “To the very, very few Americans in here, Happy Independence Day. To the rest of you, welcome to the greatest country on the face of the planet, and if you disagree, you can leave.”
One passenger, Nathan Scherer, recorded the statement and posted it on TikTok with hashtags including #xenophobia and #racism. Scherer’s father also expressed his displeasure, telling WTVC that he was embarrassed by the comments during the ride with his granddaughter.
Peterson, in a statement to WTVC, defended his remarks. “I truly do believe we are the greatest country on earth,” he said. “My statement about if you don’t like the country and don’t believe we are the best, then you can leave, is a freedom of the USA that many other countries do not have.”
The incident occurred during the lead-up to the United States' 250th birthday celebrations. The article accompanying these notes suggests that expressions of patriotism, even hyperbolic ones, are being met with overly sensitive reactions, leading to consequences for those expressing them. It contrasts Peterson's sentiments with statements from political figures who are critical of certain aspects of American society.
