Jewish communities in California are expressing fear and outrage following the sentencing of Loay Abdel Fattah Alnaji, a pro-Palestinian protester who fatally attacked a pro-Israel demonstrator. Alnaji, 53, was sentenced to one year in county jail and two years of probation for the 2023 death of Paul Kessler, 69.

Kessler died the day after he was struck with a megaphone during a protest, causing him to fall and hit his head on the pavement. Alnaji had pleaded guilty in May to felony involuntary manslaughter and felony battery charges. The Ventura County District Attorney's office announced the sentence Tuesday.

Prosecutors had sought a state prison sentence and had objected to the court's decision to impose a one-year jail term and probation. Critics argue that the sentence is too lenient and could embolden further acts of violence.

“Every American should be very concerned right now for just what has been allowed to happen, and how far and how quickly radicals have popped up in different areas,” said Rabbi Yossi Eilfort, founder of the Los Angeles nonprofit security organization Magen Am. Eilfort noted that members of the Jewish community across California are worried that more violence may follow Alnaji's light sentence, stating, “When we don’t hold people accountable, it looks like people are being given permission to act like this.”

Rabbi Eilfort also reported an increase in requests for security services from Magen Am since the start of the Israel-Hamas war, with demand rising again after Kessler's death. "It’s been busy, and I have a hunch it’s gonna get busier,” he said.

Los Angeles attorney Elizabeth Barcohana stated that "jihadist ideology" motivated Alnaji's attack on Kessler. She further criticized the Ventura County District Attorney for allegedly refusing to file hate crime enhancements in the case.

The incident occurred in Thousand Oaks during a demonstration related to the Israel-Hamas conflict. Kessler was seen waving an Israeli flag shortly before the attack. Alnaji, identified as a former professor at Moorpark College, assaulted Kessler with a megaphone, leading to the fatal injury. The event sparked widespread outrage globally.
