The Washington Commanders are keeping tabs on free agent wide receiver Stefon Diggs, who has indicated interest in joining his hometown team. Diggs, a Gaithersburg, Maryland native, played college football at the University of Maryland before being drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in 2015.
Following the recent signing of Deebo Samuel by the San Francisco 49ers, the Commanders are seeking a second wide receiver to complement Terry McLaurin. Diggs could fill this role as the team develops third-year quarterback Jayden Daniels. In a June interview, Diggs stated he would be "100 percent" open to playing for his hometown team, adding that it was "definitely would be a thing if that kind of worked out."
Diggs played college ball at Maryland from 2012 to 2014, accumulating 2,227 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns. He spent five seasons with the Vikings, followed by four seasons with the Buffalo Bills, where he recorded 37 touchdowns and helped the team reach the playoffs four consecutive times. He most recently played for the Houston Texans in 2024 and was with the New England Patriots in 2025.
Despite pleading not guilty to battery charges this offseason, Diggs did not face league punishment. His off-field actions may have contributed to teams' hesitancy in signing him. With current secondary receivers listed as rookie Antonio Williams and Luke McCaffrey, Diggs could provide a significant boost to the Commanders' receiving corps.
