Barry Morphew, a Colorado man awaiting trial for the murder of his wife Suzanne, has been arrested again for allegedly leaving his home and fleeing a hit-and-run incident. Morphew was out on $3 million bail when the alleged violation occurred.
Morphew, 58, was booked into the Boulder County Jail on Thursday night for allegedly violating his release conditions. Prosecutors stated the incident occurred on August 28 during a trip to Denver International Airport, potentially to pick up his daughter. Court filings indicate that under the terms of his bond, Morphew is required to wear a GPS monitor and is only permitted to leave his home for specific reasons such as medical emergencies, doctor's appointments, legal matters, or work. Driving to the airport for any purpose other than work is considered a breach of his bond conditions.
A woman, identified only as Christina for safety reasons, told CBS News that a Ford pickup truck, driven by a man she later believed to be Morphew, struck her vehicle. She alleged the driver refused to provide personal or insurance information and fled the scene after she threatened to call the police. Christina reported the driver offered her $300 in cash. Cellphone video captured the encounter, and Christina said she realized the driver may have been Morphew after sending the video to her mother.
Suzanne Morphew was found dead in a field in September 2023, more than three years after she disappeared from her Maysville home on Mother's Day 2020. Barry Morphew pleaded not guilty in January to first-degree murder. His original case from 2021 was dismissed after prosecutors struggled with court deadlines while Suzanne’s body remained missing. He was arrested and charged again in 2025 after her remains were discovered.
Investigators found Suzanne’s bicycle within hours of her disappearance near the family home and her helmet days later. A search of the Morphew residence uncovered a live .22 caliber bullet and a needle cap from a tranquilizer dart in the dryer. Investigators also recovered empty tranquilizer darts, a needle, and a dart gun.
Alamosa County District Judge Amanda Hopkins has scheduled a hearing for Tuesday to determine if Morphew should remain out on bond. Prior to his arrest, Judge Hopkins had requested Morphew's GPS monitoring report and records of his movements on August 28. The monitoring company reportedly did not comply with these orders. Morphew's bond conditions have since been further restricted; he is now only permitted to leave home via ambulance in the event of a medical emergency.
