Collin Gosselin, a former child star of TLC's "Jon & Kate Plus 8," has alleged that his mother, Kate Gosselin, improperly handled funds that were intended for him and his siblings. In a recent interview with The U.S. Sun, Collin, now 22, stated he has been reviewing court documents that he believes detail financial mismanagement by his estranged mother.
Collin expressed his intention to investigate the financial matters, stating, "I'm an adult now. I'm going to do my own research." He also suggested that his father, Jon Gosselin, has unfairly absorbed public criticism for issues that Kate has yet to address. "Everybody loves to say, 'Oh, this was definitely Jon behind this' – I'm an adult now," Collin said. "When these documents have my name on them and my siblings' names on them, I will find and justify the means of their money and my money – and we will find the truth."
He told the outlet that he and his siblings were meant to receive money from a collective fund, though he did not disclose specific figures. Collin claimed to have seen in court that "a lot was taken" from the fund, and he received only a small portion, which he described as "scraps." He believes more money may still be owed to him.
Collin also speculated that his reluctance to appear on television with his mother at age 12 contributed to her decision to send him to a behavioral facility. He recalled questioning his mother's decisions, which he believes led to his refusal to participate in the show, an act he described as a rebellion against "her circus."
Collin spent nearly two years in a facility after Kate Gosselin stated he exhibited "unpredictable behavior and violent tendencies towards" his relatives. Jon Gosselin eventually gained custody of Collin in 2018. Collin theorized that his placement in the facility may have been an attempt by his mother to protect her public image or simplify the logistics of filming with seven other children who were willing participants.
During his time in the facility, Collin recounted that his mother visited him once for about 20 minutes. He stated that she told him he had "broke her family" and that his siblings wanted nothing to do with him.
In 2023, Kate Gosselin acknowledged placing Collin in a facility. In a statement to People, she said Collin had received multiple psychiatric diagnoses over the years and that his placement was for the safety of herself, his siblings, and his own well-being, following insufficient outpatient treatment. She described him as "a very troubled young man who continues to need a lot of help" and stated that she and his siblings had not been involved in his life due to his history of unpredictable behavior and violent tendencies.
Regarding legal action against her son, Kate Gosselin responded to a TikTok user's question by stating she is unable to pursue legal measures because she is a public figure. She cited advice from a lawyer who indicated that courts do not honor such actions when parties are in the public eye.
Collin Gosselin is expected to release a memoir, "In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood," later this year. The show "Jon & Kate Plus 8" originally premiered in 2007 and was renamed "Kate Plus 8" after the parents' 2009 divorce.
