A U.S. Coast Guard officer was killed in a suspected random shooting in Washington state, prompting a manhunt for the assailant. Lieutenant Connor Overstreet, 29, was fatally shot just before 12:40 a.m. Sunday in a residential neighborhood of Bryn Mawr-Skyway, approximately 10 miles south of Seattle.
First responders found Overstreet in the roadway and attempted life-saving measures, but the active-duty service member later died. The King County Medical Examiner ruled his death a homicide resulting from a gunshot wound to the chest. As of Tuesday, no arrests have been made, and authorities have not publicly identified a suspect.
The county sheriff’s office has requested that residents submit any surveillance footage facing the street from the period of 12:30 a.m. to 1:15 a.m. Sunday. Further details have been withheld due to the ongoing investigation.
Overstreet, originally from Reno, Nevada, was stationed at Coast Guard Air Station Ventura in California at the time of his death. His remains were flown back to the base on Friday with full military honors.
The U.S. Coast Guard Pacific Area expressed its sorrow, stating, "The Coast Guard is deeply saddened to confirm the death of LT Connor Overstreet, an active-duty member at Coast Guard Air Station Ventura, following an incident in the Seattle area. We extend our deepest condolences to the member’s family, friends and shipmates during this tragic time."
Overstreet’s family has announced a $11,000 reward for information that could help solve the homicide. His wife, Madeleine, called for justice for her "soulmate," remembering him as someone who "truly was the best of us." His father, Brennan Overstreet, pleaded with the public for any information that might provide answers and bring peace to the family during their "unimaginable tragedy."
