A climber died Sunday after a fall on Castle Peak, a 14,272-foot peak in Colorado's Elk Mountains south of Aspen. Mountain Rescue Aspen confirmed that responders determined the individual had sustained unsurvivable injuries.

The Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office was notified of the fallen climber, prompting a significant rescue effort. According to Mountain Rescue Aspen, 21 team members were deployed. Officials utilized off-highway vehicles and helicopters to access the remote location. A helicopter located the fallen climber and returned to Aspen to pick up additional personnel before transporting them to the high-elevation area near the peak.

Rescue teams reached the climber by 4 p.m., and the deceased individual was safely recovered and evacuated from the mountain shortly after 8 p.m. Nearby hikers witnessed the incident, with one bystander, identified as Robert, reportedly attempting to reach the climber immediately after the fall. Rebecca Rees, a hiker who posted about the event on Facebook, described the afternoon as "extremely sad and terrible for all involved."

Rees also commended the speed and compassion of the rescue crews. Despite the challenging terrain and holiday weekend, ground and helicopter teams reportedly reached nearly 13,000 feet in under two hours. She stated that the responders, sheriff, and coroner demonstrated extraordinary compassion, making everyone feel that "every single person matters."
