Victoria Gordon, a cleaner from Lincoln, recently unearthed a 35-year-old Mars bar while working in a hoarder's house. The discovery prompted Gordon to purchase a current-day Mars bar for comparison, revealing a stark difference in size.
Gordon, who runs a cleaning business specializing in biohazard sites, crime scenes, and hoarded houses, found the vintage chocolate bar in North Lincolnshire. She noted the significant size discrepancy between the 1991 bar and its contemporary counterpart. "Even though I knew it was big, I was surprised when I bought one to compare," Gordon stated. "It is a shame really. While I do totally understand inflation, shrinkflation is a bit of a swizz, as my mum would say. The size difference was greater than I expected."
Historical data indicates that in 1991, a Mars bar cost between 25p and 30p and weighed approximately 65 grams. The older version measured 14cm in length. In contrast, a modern Mars bar costs around £1.20 and weighs about 40 grams, with a length of 9.5cm.
Gordon shared a video of her discovery online, which garnered over 700,000 views. She expressed surprise at the clip's popularity, though she has had previous videos go viral. Gordon finds uncovering vintage items like the Mars bar to be a rewarding aspect of her work. "My absolute favourite part of the hoarder clearances are finding treasure like that. I find so many old and vintage things. I find it fascinating," she told creatorzine.com.
