As the Clacton constituency prepares for a by-election, the critical role of social care in the local economy has been brought to the forefront by industry insiders. While candidates have addressed issues concerning the National Health Service, including access to general practitioners and dentists, the social care sector has received less attention.
Rahul Jagota, who manages The Corner House care home in Clacton and previously chaired the Essex Care Association, emphasized the significance of social care. "Social care is the biggest economy in the area. It's the most important economy in the area," Jagota stated. He urged political leaders to discuss the sector's challenges and successes, advocating for a more positive and solution-oriented approach. "Why it's not on the agenda, I'm not sure, but it's pretty much recognised as we are the driving force of the local industry here."
Jagota also noted the reliance on international recruitment to staff care homes. Approximately 40% of his staff are foreign nationals, with the remainder being local hires. He indicated that without this international workforce, the sector would face significant staff shortages. The health and social care sector collectively employs around 4,500 people within the Clacton constituency, underscoring its substantial impact on the local job market and economy.
