Veteran footballer Chris Smalling, with a career spanning 580 club appearances across three countries and 31 England caps, is currently back in northwest England evaluating his next steps, including finding a new club.

Smalling, who previously played for Manchester United and AS Roma, expressed pride in his consistent performance for Al-Fayha in the Saudi Pro-League last season. He highlighted his current understanding of his body, stating, "I know my body now better than when I was 26 and that's shown in the games I'm playing." He detailed his commitment to longevity and recovery, which includes meticulous attention to diet, supplements, and even genetic testing to tailor his nutritional intake. "A lot of my supplements were changed because of that," he noted.

His path to professional football was not always clear. Eighteen years ago, Smalling was pursuing a degree in financial economics and considering other non-league clubs near Leicester. The opportunity with Fulham arose late in the summer, and he accepted a contract offer from then-manager Roy Hodgson after a brief trial, describing the experience as "total shock."

During his time at Manchester United, Smalling played under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson. He also worked with Jose Mourinho, experiencing different managerial styles throughout his career. "When you get beyond 30, each year is precious in terms of enjoying playing and being passionate about football," Smalling reflected, emphasizing the importance of enjoying the later stages of his playing career.
