Comedian Chris Rock stated this week that Los Angeles exposes a dark "underbelly" that its residents often pretend does not exist. In an interview with Variety, Rock described the city as "complicated," noting a shift in the nature of fame.
"People who came to Hollywood used to want to be great — a great singer, great actor, great comedian," Rock said. "Now it’s just fame, and the greatness is almost assumed."
Rock, who splits his time between homes in New York and Los Angeles, acknowledged the city's positive aspects, such as its desirable climate. However, he emphasized that it also attracts individuals with less desirable traits.
"It can be beautiful. It’s got the best weather in the world. But it also attracts an underbelly that people want to pretend doesn’t exist," he told the publication.
LA's Dichotomy
Rock is currently directing an independent film titled "Misty Green," which focuses on a financially struggling former actress living in Los Angeles. He noted that the film delves into the city's "wonky priorities."
"There’s a real estate office on the same street as The Ivy on Robertson, and in the window, there are houses for $30-$40 million. In the window. But there’s a homeless guy sleeping right outside. The movie is about that crazy dichotomy," Rock explained.
Dennis Quaid, another celebrity who has relocated from Los Angeles, echoed sentiments about the city's challenges. Quaid attributed his move to Nashville to residents' frustration with high taxes, declining public services, and the aftermath of wildfires. He has stated that he is "just one of thousands who have left" the city.
Reflections on Fame and Incident
Rock also briefly touched upon the 2022 incident at the Academy Awards where he was slapped by Will Smith. He expressed a desire for the event not to have occurred, characterizing the world as "crazy."
"We walk by homeless people. There’s all sorts of s--t going on right now. Me having a bad day is not the biggest — it’s not that important," Rock reflected.
When asked about potentially returning to the Oscars, Rock stated he would only do so if nominated, and he does not anticipate that happening. He concluded by saying he is managing his expectations regarding such events.
