Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie declared that "the Trump era is over" following the Republican Party's significant losses in the midterm elections. Christie believes the results were a rejection of how the GOP governed under former President Donald Trump, rather than an endorsement of Democratic policies.
"I do not believe that the voters last night picked Democrats," Christie told The Post. "I think they decided to defeat Republicans for our broken promises and our lack of character. And if Democrats believe that’s a mandate for democratic socialism in America, they’re dead wrong, and they could wind up on the other end of this beating in two years."
According to RealClearPolitics, Democratic approval ratings are underwater by 15.6 percentage points, while Republican approval ratings are down by 19 points. The scale of the Republican defeats in the November 3 election was historically large, with Democrats on track to secure their largest House majority since at least 2008 and potentially maintaining Senate control for an extended period. The popular vote margin for Democrats also appears to be their largest since the Watergate era.
Christie attributed the Republican losses to "a whole raft of broken promises," referencing Trump's past commitments on issues such as ending wars, lowering prices, and fighting corruption. He asserted that the party needs new leadership capable of articulating a forward-looking vision beyond Trump.
"The Trump era is over after last night, and the people who are going to lead the party going forward are the ones who will be able to articulate a message that’s forward-looking and different than just sitting around and talking about Donald Trump," Christie stated. "We need to have a new leader who articulates a new vision, and I think that vision’s got to include how important character is in our nation’s governance."
Christie also expressed skepticism about the presidential aspirations of Vice President JD Vance, suggesting that Vance would be too closely associated with Trump's administration. He also commented on Secretary of State Marco Rubio's political position, citing concerns over "foreign policy misadventures."
Christie, who has previously suggested he might consider a presidential run in 2028, stated he has no set timeline for making a decision but confirmed his openness to considering another campaign. He emphasized the importance of unifying around character and integrity as a starting point for the party's future direction, citing Trump's "drain the swamp" slogan while lamenting perceived enrichments by officials during his presidency.
