A four-year-old girl was diagnosed with a brain tumor just 12 hours after an eye test, a development that left her mother in distress. Mothers Katie, 41, reported that her daughter, Phoebe, began experiencing vomiting and severe headaches in February. A general practitioner initially attributed these symptoms to migraines.
In May, following an eye examination, an optician contacted Katie, advising her to take Phoebe to the emergency department at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge immediately. It was there that Phoebe received her brain tumor diagnosis.
"I fell apart and just sobbed and sobbed," Katie recounted. "I kept thinking, how am I going to tell her dad and the other children?"
Fortunately, Phoebe's tumor was not cancerous. She is now receiving care from specialists. Reflecting on the experience, Katie noted, "I felt like we were probably wasting the hospital's time because Phoebe was running around playing like normal but, looking back, she was probably the sickest kid there."
Katie also shared the difficulty of awaiting answers about her daughter's prognosis. "I kept asking if Phoebe would survive but the doctors said they were unable to answer that at that time, which is the worst thing in the world as a parent."
