Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy is maintaining his involvement with the team remotely as his wife, Mia Bieniemy, recovers from an incident in which she was allegedly shot by their son, Elijah Bieniemy. Elijah Bieniemy, 27, faces charges including malicious wounding and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. Mia Bieniemy was found with multiple gunshot wounds and initially hospitalized in critical condition. She has since been moved out of the intensive care unit and is reported to be in stable condition. The incident occurred on July 26 in Ashburn, Virginia. Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach confirmed that Bieniemy, 54, remains engaged with the team despite the personal crisis. Veach stated that a live feed of practices has been set up for Bieniemy, allowing him to watch and analyze drills remotely. Veach noted Bieniemy's continued dedication to detail, citing an instance where Bieniemy called him during a practice to relay a message to rookie running back Emmett Johnson via head coach Andy Reid. "That’s the thing…it’s so refreshing to have back — that attention to detail," Veach said, referencing Bieniemy's return to the organization this offseason. "He demands each player knows his assignment. There’s never a safe space with him." Veach suggested Bieniemy's return was intended to instill a heightened sense of accountability and focus within the team, which posted a 6-11 record last season. Bieniemy previously contributed to two Super Bowl victories during his earlier tenure with the Chiefs. Elijah Bieniemy has been granted a mental-health competency evaluation. Court records indicate that he "appears to suffer from significant mental health issues" and is not currently able to assist in his own defense. A report from Loudoun County Sheriff's Office indicated that Elijah had reportedly called the police two days prior to the alleged shooting, stating that his parents were withholding his weapons and that, as a UFC fighter, he felt unable to defend himself without them. Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid has expressed his support for the Bieniemy family during this difficult time. Bieniemy's focus is split between supporting his wife's recovery and contributing to the Chiefs' preparations as training camp intensifies.
