The organization behind a chat room reportedly accessed by former "Wheel of Fortune" announcer Jim Thornton has issued a statement explaining the site's existence and purpose. LifeLine Chat describes itself as a support forum for individuals attracted to children and adolescents.

In its statement, the organization asserted that it has strict rules against illicit behavior and the sharing of illegal imagery, with violators facing swift bans. LifeLine Chat stated that the platform exists because "most people attracted to minors are fully capable of behaving responsibly, yet extremely distressed by the stigmatization of their feelings."

The group claims that users need a place to talk to ensure better mental health, which can lead to more positive outcomes. It also noted that users can share messages that might be considered "offensive" as long as they do not cross legal boundaries or put anyone at risk of harm. According to the statement, this approach has helped divert users from making harmful decisions.

LifeLine Chat highlighted the difficulty individuals face in accessing professional support due to the severe risk of being reported to authorities for disclosing their feelings. The organization suggested that the public's punitive response, exemplified by the "metaphorical lynching of the celebrity," demonstrates why such a space is necessary.

Jim Thornton, 61, was photographed in May accessing the LifeLine Chat site on a plane. A fellow passenger alerted a flight attendant, and upon arrival at Los Angeles International Airport, Thornton was met by law enforcement. American Airlines confirmed the incident was reported by a customer.

Thornton's lawyer told Page Six that his client was misdirected to the site by other websites offering support for suicidal thoughts. The attorney claimed Thornton had left the page and had not returned, asserting that his client had never viewed or downloaded child pornography and was not arrested or charged with a crime. However, images published by TMZ appeared to show Thornton engaging in the chatroom for nearly an hour.

Thornton was initially suspended from "Wheel of Fortune" and has since been fired. He has been edited out of the show's upcoming season. His social media accounts have reportedly been deactivated. Thornton has not made a public statement regarding the incident and has not been arrested or charged.
