A statue commemorating Charlie Kirk was unveiled in Times Square on Thursday, an event that devolved into chaos as protesters and supporters clashed. The dedication took place on the anniversary of the conservative activist's assassination.
Footage captured at the New York City landmark showed hostile scenes as crowds gathered for the unveiling. The 6-foot-5 statue, created by sculptor Sergio Furnari at a cost of $100,000, was intended to spark debate, according to Furnari. However, the event quickly became aggressive, with individuals draped in American flags arguing with protesters.
At one point, a group of young men stood before the statue with raised hands as the situation intensified. Another man, wearing an American flag vest, was seen attempting to de-escalate the situation by telling others to "calm down."
One individual was observed holding a large American flag and shouting about "Islamists" while others confronted him. Police halted traffic through Midtown Manhattan as the heavily populated area filled with onlookers.
