Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative activist and close ally of former President Donald Trump, was shot Wednesday at a college in Utah, according to reports. Details about his condition and the circumstances of the shooting were not immediately available.
Kirk, 31, is the co-founder of Turning Point USA, a nationwide student organization he established in 2012 when he was 18. Over the past decade he has become one of the most visible figures in the conservative youth movement, touring college campuses to hold open-air debates and hosting a widely followed daily podcast that posts clips of his exchanges with students on topics such as transgender identity, climate change, faith and family values.
Turning Point USA has grown under Kirk’s leadership into an organization with chapters at more than 850 colleges. The group played a prominent role in voter outreach efforts for Republican campaigns, and political operatives and Republican officials have credited the organization with registering tens of thousands of new voters in recent election cycles. Kirk has been widely cited by conservative strategists as influential in mobilizing young voters in battleground states, including Arizona.
Born and raised in the Chicago suburb of Prospect Heights, Kirk is the son of an architect. He attended a community college near Chicago and later dropped out to devote himself to political activism, though he has referenced his lack of a four-year degree during public debates and appearances. He once applied for admission to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point but was not accepted.
Kirk’s profile rose after President Barack Obama’s re-election in 2012, when he began speaking at Republican events and at gatherings popular with Tea Party activists. He has been a frequent visitor to events linked to Trump and the Make America Great Again movement, attended Mr. Trump’s inauguration in January and has been welcomed by White House officials as a source of grassroots sentiment among conservative youth.
Earlier this year, Kirk spoke at the Oxford Union in the United Kingdom and has authored a best-selling book, The MAGA Doctrine, published in 2020. He has also traveled with members of the Trump family on political trips; earlier this year he accompanied Donald Trump Jr. on a trip to Greenland amid discussions among Trump aides about the Arctic.
Kirk is married to podcaster Erika Frantzve, a former Miss Arizona USA. The couple live in Scottsdale, Arizona, and have two children. He identifies as an evangelical Christian and has often highlighted his faith in public remarks.
A clip played at the start of his podcast features praise from President Trump: “I want to thank Charlie, he’s an incredible guy, his spirit, his love of this country, he’s done an amazing job building one of the most powerful youth organisations ever created,” the president says in the recording.
Kirk’s role as a media personality has included frequent use of social platforms to amplify campus encounters and conservative viewpoints. His style of staging debates and confrontations with students has made him a polarizing figure on campuses and in political media circles.
As news of the shooting circulated, officials had not released additional information about the incident, and Kirk’s organization had not immediately provided comment. Local law enforcement and the college where the shooting occurred had not publicly detailed whether there were any arrests or motives identified.
Kirk’s prominence in conservative politics has grown alongside Turning Point USA’s expansion, making him a central figure in the Republican Party’s outreach to younger voters and a frequent subject of national political coverage. The shooting adds a new and uncertain chapter to his public profile as authorities work to determine the facts surrounding the incident.
