Basketball icon Charles Barkley has voiced criticism of WNBA leadership, specifically Commissioners Adam Silver and Cathy Engelbert, for what he perceives as a lack of a strong and definitive stance on the participation of transgender athletes in the league. Barkley stated his support for the gay and transgender communities but asserted that men should not compete in women's sports.
Appearing on Michael Smerconish's radio show, Barkley expressed disappointment with the WNBA's handling of the issue, suggesting that the league has allowed the conversation to be influenced by external groups and individuals seeking attention. He believes Silver and Engelbert should have established a clear policy early on to prevent the debate from escalating.
"People are looking for attention now," Barkley commented on individuals he described as pushing an agenda. He suggested that the commissioners should have stated unequivocally, "The WNBA is for women, and listen, this is the last time we're going to discuss it. We're not going to turn it over to the fools on the internet. We're not going to turn it over to Congress. The WNBA is for women only, period." Barkley implied that a firm declaration early in the season could have prevented the controversy from dominating headlines.
Barkley also lamented that the ongoing debate has overshadowed what he considers a historic season for the WNBA. He pointed to the notable performances of players such as Paige Bueckers, A'ja Wilson, Caitlin Clark, and rookie Olivia Miles, as well as the league's expansion and increased player salaries. "This was a great summer for them," he said, but added, "I can't remember the last time I heard something positive about the WNBA."
The controversy involves discussions around the eligibility and participation of transgender women in women's sports, a topic that has gained significant attention across various sports leagues and public discourse.
