A charity shop in Romford, east London, is offering school uniforms for £5, providing much-needed financial relief for families facing rising costs. S.M.I.L.E. London & Essex, an organization dedicated to supporting families experiencing poverty, homelessness, and hardship, runs the initiative for the eighth consecutive year.

Maria Quaife from S.M.I.L.E. London and Essex stated that the shop has approximately 1,000 items of branded and generic school uniform available, sourced from the Havering and Barking and Dagenham areas. The program allows families to donate uniforms their children have outgrown and take as much as they need for their children for a flat fee of £5. Quaife noted that about 500 children utilize the service annually, a number that has unfortunately increased each year due to the cost of living. She highlighted that a new school uniform can cost between £300 and £400 per child, suggesting the shop saves local families thousands of pounds collectively.

Parents have expressed relief with the affordable prices. "It helps me not to be anxious, because the price is really affordable so I don't have to worry too much," said parent Sandra Koli. She added that the timing is opportune, as it allows families to prepare for the upcoming school year without the end-of-August rush and associated higher expenses, enabling a more relaxed summer period.

In addition to uniforms, the shop also offers shoes and football boots at reduced prices. The charity shop's efforts aim to alleviate the financial burden on families as they prepare for the new school term.
