The Los Angeles Chargers have signed practice squad tight end Hayden Rucci to the active roster, addressing a critical need following injuries to David Njoku and Charlie Kolar. Rucci was acquired from Jacksonville's practice squad.

Njoku and Kolar were placed on injured reserve, leaving a significant gap in the Chargers' tight end corps. The team plans to utilize Oronde Gadsden II as a primary tight end, with Rucci now joining the active unit. The Chargers also have two other tight ends on their practice squad: Evan Svoboda and Patrick Herbert, brother of quarterback Justin Herbert, who could be elevated.

Rucci has limited NFL experience, appearing in four games and recording a single tackle on special teams. He entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2024, initially signing with the Dolphins. His career has seen him spend time with the Lions and the 49ers before joining the Chargers.

The move comes as the Chargers face a challenging start to their season. The team holds an 0-2 record, marking a disappointing beginning to the Jim Harbaugh era, which had begun the previous two seasons with a 2-0 record. The team has also been hampered by injuries to a significant portion of its free agent signings.

The Chargers' offense has struggled, particularly given the arrival of new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel. The team is looking to address multiple issues as they navigate the current season.
