The season finale of 'Dutton Ranch' culminated in a violent showdown and the shocking abduction of Beth Dutton's adopted son, Carter, by cartel kingpin Mariano Reyes, also known as "El Padrino." The episode, titled "El Padrino," revealed that for at least 15 years, the 10-Petal operation, run by Beulah, had been using live cattle to smuggle millions of dollars worth of fentanyl into the United States.

The Unraveling Operation

As Beth and Rip Wheeler brought a new shipment of cattle from Mexico to their ranch for inspection, their hired help, Everett McKinney, discovered the illicit cargo. Veterinarian Everett found packets of fentanyl hidden within the body cavities of anesthetized cows. This revelation led to a confrontation between Beth and Rip and Beulah's son, Rob-Will, who was subsequently assaulted by Rip. Angered and humbled, Rob-Will contacted Beulah, revealing that Beth's team had intercepted their shipment.

Meanwhile, Beulah, who had been planning to retire with Everett, found herself at odds with him after he learned of her involvement in drug trafficking. Beth, searching for Carter after a party explosion, was unable to locate him, with Sheriff Wade offering little assistance. Her search led her to Oreana at the 10-Petal mansion, but Oreana also hadn't seen Carter since the incident.

El Padrino's Control

Mariano Reyes, the true kingpin operating from Mexico, uses Beulah to manage his northern operations and service the ranch's debts. The plan was for Beulah to install Joaquin as her successor, but Mariano deemed Joaquin too soft and Rob-Will a liability. To reassert his control, Mariano demanded the elimination of Beth and Rip, whom he referred to as "wolves," and ordered his son to kill his own brother.

As a cartel hit squad advanced on Dutton Ranch, Beth remained unable to find Carter. While Rip, Everett, and others engaged the cartel gunmen, Carter was with Dwight and Oreana. Oreana, having discovered she was pregnant, urged Carter to leave with her, but their romantic plan was cut short.

Hostage Situation

After Dutton Ranch's team repelled the first wave of cartel attackers and disposed of their bodies, Beth received a call from Mariano. The kingpin revealed he had abducted Carter, not for the drugs or the ranch, but to make Beth and Rip suffer. "They don’t want Carter," Rip stated. "They want us." The episode concluded with Beth resolute in her determination to face the threat, stating, "They’re gonna fucking get us."

In a final act of the season, Rob-Will was shot dead on the 10-Petal doorstep, a consequence of Mariano's orders. His daughter, Oreana, was described as the only untainted member of their family, and his genuine love for her was highlighted, even as the ranch was left to "keep the bones."
