Canadians' perception of the United States has sharply declined, with a CNN analysis attributing the shift in large part to former President Donald Trump and his policies. Harry Enten, CNN's chief data analyst, stated that Canadians now express significant dislike for the U.S., a stark contrast to previous years.
According to Enten, the net favorability rating of the United States among Canadians has fallen from +13 points before Trump's return to office to -33 points currently. He described this change as "unbelievable" and "unprecedented."
This decline in favorability is further reflected in Canadians' confidence in the U.S. president. During President Joe Biden's term, 52% of Canadians expressed confidence in the U.S. president, while 46% did not. Under Trump, however, only 20% of Canadians reported confidence in the president, with 79% expressing no confidence. Enten noted that "four in five Canadians are not confident in the president of the United States," suggesting this is a primary driver of the negative sentiment towards the U.S. overall.
